Product Description

Proto Armour for Raspberry Pi is a protective enclosure designed specifically for the very popular Raspberry Pi credit-card sized computer. Students, engineers and designers alike, all love the Raspberry Pi for its small size and big list of features and capabilities. While low cost and strong community support top the feature list, an area that challenges many Pi enthusiasts however is experienced first hand while breaking out connections to external hardware and peripherals. Attaching a few cables to the board immediately reveals how lightweight the device is and how vulnerable it is to physical harm. The Raspberry Pi, like most other development boards, is a small fully exposed circuit board with limited non-standard mounting features. Proto Armour for Raspberry Pi offers wrap-around protection and supplements the board's limited non-standard mounting capabilities with a host of structural support and standardized mounting features.

Durable Construction

Experimentation is often performed outside the safety of a lab environment. Gadgets usually contain breadboards and sensitive electronics that require a layer of protection, or better yet - a layer of armour. Proto Armour for Raspberry Pi is made from aircraft-grade aluminum using state-of-the-art CNC equipment at our facility in Orchard Park, New York USA. Parts are machined to exacting specifications, resulting in an enclosure that fits your Pi like a glove. Many surface treatments are available, ranging from a cost-effective bare metal finish, to a professional looking anodized coating in a variety of colors.

Structural Modular Design

Gadgets sometimes require external components or subsystems that are mounted close by. Proto Armour for Raspberry Pi features an assortment of threaded holes and structural reinforcements that facilitate the mounting of external components and subsystems directly to the case. Other versions of Proto Armour protective enclosure hardware is compatible with a variety of platforms such as Arduino development boards, Freescale Freedom Platform, and 'mbed' modules from ARM. In most cases, Proto Armour hole spacing allows for interlocking several enclosures into a single assembly. Accessories such as brackets and spacers are designed to be compatible across the product line where possible.

Passive Cooling

The Raspberry Pi supports overclocking, but this practice generates additional heat that could damage the board. Proto Armour for Raspberry Pi dissipates heat from the CPU, Ethernet controller, and voltage regulator. Three heat sinks are machined directly into the top half of the housing and interface with each heat source using a thermally conductive pad.

LED Indicators

The Raspberry Pi includes five LEDs that indicate various status information. Proto Armour for Raspberry Pi features five though holes, each perfectly aligned with a Pi LED. Acrylic light pipes are included that conduct LED illumination to outside the enclosure for easier viewing.

Security Friendly

The Raspberry Pi is a very cool gadget. Whether it is a classroom setting where several Pi boards need to be attached to student benches, or at a hackerspace meetup where a new creation is on display, it is critical to properly secure sensitive and valuable hardware. Proto Armour for Raspberry Pi is assembled using machine screws that are threaded from the bottom and hidden from unintended guests. The included through holes facilitate mounting the enclosure directly to a tabletop using special tamper resistant screws. Cover plates are also available to prevent cable detachment and memory card removal.

While functionality and quality are equally priority number one, affordability goes without being said. In line with the Raspberry Pi's cost effective design, Proto Armour for Raspberry Pi is designed for manufacture, resulting in a lower cost of manufacture that enables low cost of ownership. New enclosure and accessory design is a careful balance of functionality, robust construction, and affordability for all.

    Absolutely flawless design.

  2. best case on the market 5 Star Review

Posted by on 31st Aug 2014

We have used about 70 of these case for our kiosk print server. Those unit are on 24 for 7 7 days a week. this case keep the raspberry pi working nicely. We have not had a failure do to overheating.

Now that the plus is out we are buying more.......

  3. Great case, service can be improved though 4 Star Review

Posted by on 13th Aug 2014

First ordered a case which was delivered at the wrong address (my bad, filled in a wrong house number). I noticed the case was returned to the sender but I never heard if the case was received by MobileApp Systems. Unfortunately, I still havent heard anything about it...

I bought another one, because I was excited about this case. I received it and the case is great. Sadly I payed about $100,- for just one case...

  4. Works great, protects my RPi 5 Star Review

Posted by on 30th Jul 2014

When I first got my RPi, I bought the Adafruit Pi Box for it, but after carrying it around in my backpack for a few days one of the connecting parts snapped and the case fell apart. So I decided to get a solid Aluminum case to replace it.

It's significantly more expensive, but I don't have to worry about it breaking, no matter what I do to it. Even the SD card and cable connections are protected by the overhanging edge. It's kinda hard to remove the Ethernet cable because the clip is under the edge of the case, but other than that it works perfectly

  5. Calidad mecanica y visual/tactil 5 Star Review

Posted by on 3rd Jun 2014

  6. Incredible For Industrial Purposes 5 Star Review

This product is absolutely awesome. Good strong metal case with the forethought to become a heatsink. I want to see a waterproof case next :)

  7. very good 5 Star Review

  8. Ideal Case For The Raspberry PI 5 Star Review

Posted by on 21st Feb 2014

This case is well manufactured and precisely machined. The assembly was simple and straight forward. The Raspberry PI's that I have installed into these cases are running 24/7 and will benefit from the heat transfer provided by the case.

  9. Excellent Milled Metal Case for Raspberry Pi 5 Star Review

Posted by on 13th Feb 2014

I'm using my RPi as a media center and for some minor home automation tasks. This is a very high quality case, it keeps the RPi board nice and secure.

I no longer feel like my Pi is this fragile little exposed thing. If my home is hit by a tornado, the Pi is probably the only thing that will survive. ;)

I didn't measure temperature differences before and after installing the board into the case, but based on how it warms up slightly it seems to be pulling heat away from the board.

  10. Solid as a rock 5 Star Review

Posted by on 4th Feb 2014

I purchased this case because I work in a rough environment and I tend to be hard on the electronics as well. This case more than satisfies. The whole case acts as a heat sink to the CPU, USB/Ethernet, and Power ICs and comes with thermal transfer pads to make the connection between those ICs and the case. The case fits together extremely precisely, and will remain so under rough conditions. If you need to take the case apart, you can do that without messing up anything. Also, the case includes light rods and padding (to keep them in place) so you can have all of your indicators on the side next to the A/V outputs.

Some things to take in to consideration: most all of the inputs/outputs are recessed so as not to cause wear and tear on the ports or their connectors, with that said keep in mind when it comes to plugging in devices to the Pi's built-in USB ports. Unless you have extension cables, the connectors/devices cannot be too bulky because they will not fit if they would normally hang off the board. Also, getting the SD card out is a tad bit more difficult but that is just a nit-pick. These are the only cons about the case in my daily observation. It is simply a joy to use and is well worth it's price.
